Lasting

Lasting

It’s no wonder
you’ve lasted seven years
longer than most predicted
it’d take before
you killed each other.

On average, ordinary life
couples quarrel over coffee
socks in hallways
checks bounced for bills
or kids sent to public school.

But ten open heart surgeries
later, he has whispered
“you’re okay” more times
than you can count.

And I watched him
run through sliding glass doors
carrying your lifeless body
in his arms, holding on
for dear life, ready to move
mountains to make you breathe.

Moments like those
brought you closer
than we will ever know.

Nothing
will come
between you.

(for Jessie and Brad)
